Write the grading method at the top and use it consistently. That one line is what turns a page of numbers into a record somebody else can read.

For example: how corrections count, whether the highest attempt or the first attempt is recorded, how a mastery check is weighted against daily work, and what happens to work that is not finished. Decide it once, write it here, and stop re-deciding it at ten o’clock on a Sunday.

The mastery note is worth more than the score. “18/20 — both errors were sign errors, not method” tells you what to do on Monday. “90%” tells you nothing, and in six months it will not remind you of anything either.

A grade is only as meaningful as the task, the support and the method behind it. If a child scores well with a parent sitting beside them, record that — it is not cheating, it is information, and it is the difference between a skill that is secure and one that is supported.
